My husband, Dale Finley, had the Maze procedure march 11th at the cleveland clinic. The surgery was done by Dr Pat McCarthy, and wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. The thought of open-heart surgery, and being placed on the heart-lung machine, did not thrill him at all. But on the advice of his cleveland clinic doctor, he "bit-the -bullet" on march 11,2002. The second and third days, were the worst for him,as he was sick to his stomach. He had no appetite (which is VERY unusal for him), and didn't even like the thought of ice-cream. Dale was fortunate as he had no other conditions to deal with. His arteries, valves, and heart muscle were all normal. I told him that I didn't know how a man who ate so much Ben and Jerry's ice-cream could have no blockage at all. I guess he is just lucky. He's had some trouble with going in and out of AFIB since his surgery on Monday, but they say this is normal and to be expected. He is due to be released tomorrow March 18th. The only problem I can see, is that I have to drive, and he has to sit in the back seat---I told the Doctor that when ever I drive he's ALWAYS in the back seat!!!!If you know what I mean. I'll give you an update after he gets back home. He doesn't know how to use a computer, so during his "stay" at home, I'm going to get him to at least use the Maze website. I'm not real great on a computer, but keep trying. Thanks for your help, and support. Message from Lee Finley--wife of patient Dale R. Finley--the new Mazer!
