Going down memory lane...

Today (or, rather, in 20 minutes from now local time) three years ago a somewhat dazed but nevertheless determined and optimistic soon-to-be 40 year old went through the Maze operation at the Huddinge University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. I remember waking up first thinking that I was on my way to surgery and then realizing that it was all over. And that I was fine! I then passed out and, once again, woke up with the same strange realization (soon? no! it's all over!). Believe me, in spite of all the discomfort, the feeling was strong and wonderful. The two days following the operation were no walk in the park...The strongest memory is the constant struggle for water; you're not allowed more than a sip of water(getting rid of bodily fluids is imperative after the op and has - from what I've come to understand - a crucial impact on a quick recovery). It was the closest I've been to a feeling of what it must be like to get lost in the desert!
Anyway, to make a fairly long story short - today I'm a happy camper. The journey back to normal life has perhaps not been straight, but on the whole without any major bumps. I've experienced few (if any) set backs. Coming back to running (I used to be a competative long distance runner) has been hard, but still amazingly uneventful. Sure, it hasn't been easy, especially the first year, year and half. But more importantly, I've made good progress all along. Today, I run, train and race freely. My times have come down and I've even begun to be able to compare myself to my old racing buddies.
Am I glad a had the Maze? You bet! Life with Afib was never an option for me.
So, I'll like to thank everyone out there for sharing their stories, for spreading the word and for your enthusiasm. My gratitude and thanks, once again, of course goes out to Mr. Cox whom we all have so much to thank for.
Good luck to all Mazers, current and future, out there!
Best regards,
Anders Kingstedt, Sweden
