The AFX microwave ablation is usually done with a full sternotomy (our incision is 6-8 inches), we have not yet tried another approach. The thoracotomy (between the ribs) approach could possibly be used, but through experience we have found this to be a much more painful incision then the sternal incision. The great advantage to the AFX microwave ablation is we are able to do it on a beating heart, therefore do not go on cardiopulmonary bypass.
