Dave & Henry: I THINK this "pen" is not unlike the cryolesion tips being currently used (for at least 1 year) in the Maze III procedure. I am not aware of surgeons still doing the "cut and suture" of more than 34 incisions at this time. I believe it is still necessary to access the heart and get into the atria whether by open chest or "mini" procedure, using this device.
I think about every "mazer" who has posted here in the last year or so has had cryolesion (ablation) performed as part of their surgeries. I know mine in January was done in this fashion at the CC.
