In five years of being cared for by six well-respected cardiologists, I never had a heart cath.
I believe it is usually done only if there is the pain of angina indicating a possible heart attack may be coming. Maybe it should be done more.
I had my first and only heart cath three days before Dr McCarthy operated on me. Fortunately, my arteries were all clear so no bypass was required. I am 69 years old and do not eat any red meat, only rice and fish. No cow's milk, only soymilk. It pays to watch the diet.

Your husband is in very good hands. Dr McCarthy is the best. The worrying is worse than the procedure.

My very best wishes to you both.
