I am 55 and had my MAZE at the Cleeland Clinic (Dr. McCarthy) on 8/8/00. I am doing well, but have to say that I have noticed a decline in my mental capacity since surgery. As you noted, we all have 'senior moments' but this goes beyond that. I recently started back to work (new job)and have had a hard time getting back in the groove. A new job is stressful at any age, but I feel that I am having a more difficult time than I expected. I'm a systems analyst, and find that I am far more challenged on 'simple' things than I used to be and slower to pick up concepts. However, I don't for one minute regret my decision to have the MAZE. But, I do feel that the doctors/clinics should follow up in the months/years post-op with their patients. I feel very fortunate to have done this well, and am sorry to read of those who have not. Someone considering the procedure should have the benfit of seeing the 'whole' picture... the "95% CURE RATE" stats seem to be inflated.
