Hiya all,

Thank you for helpin' my Pops! My name is Marianne (alken3@home.com) and I am the first daughter. I flew out from San Diego CA to the Cleveland Clinic and met Dad at the Guesthouse Hotel on Monday 10-15-01. He had the Maze surgery with Dr. McCarthy on Tuesday 10-16-01.

Dad is doing GREAT! He's sitting next to me by Nursing Station 101 (10th floor) at the free email PC. It's 2pm the day after his surgery and he's on no medication or pain killers and walking around the floor. He's in NSR!!

We met with Dr. McCarthy yesterday morning at 8am 10-16-01. Only Maze was required (no bypass or valve repair) and only the small incision method would be used.

We waited until 12:30 pm for his surgery. He was given a relaxant shot in the butt to calm him down (and let me tell you, he needed it!)

At 4:30pm, Dr McCarthy called me at the hotel to say the operation was a complete success and that the small incision method was used. I could see Dad in ICU at 7:30-8:00pm (visiting hours).

At 7:30pm, I saw Dad and the intubation tube had already been removed. He was a bit out of it (good drugs) and the first thing out of his mouth was, "Is it all over!?!" "Yes," I told him, "it was all over."

He said his chest hardly hurt, but then described the pain as "a fat man sitting on a chair with one chair leg on his chest." Sounds painful to me, but whatever.

This morning, 10-17-01, in the ICU, they removed the drainage tubes from his chest, which he said was somewhat painful. He was then moved to a regular room on the 10th Floor. Room G101-05, phone 216-444-1542.

He was walking around the floor this morning with oxygen and surprising all the nurses, "Didn't you just have surgery yesterday? What are you doing walking around?"

He sends his best wishes to everybody and I'll be glad when he can do his own typing!

Love and hugs,

One damn grateful daughter,

Marianne Alken (alken3@home.com)

P.S. Rose and Pat Alken (my siblings, are also very grateful).

God Bless Our Planet
